Broken Water is an unflinching look at the mother/daughter relationship - a relationship where we should find our greatest comforts, but, so often, find our greatest failures. Debby Carr Little Rock, AR
I devoured this book in 2 sittings! Amazing book and I'm recommending it to all my friends and family. The characters and their stories are so rich and intriguing that I felt an instant friendship with them. I often wonder about them and hope to hear more. Paula, you absolutely nailed it. Congratulations and please, please, please keep writing! What a gift you have given us! Sharon Pflieger Charlotte, NC
What a beautifully written book! The deep thought and exploration that it required is so very evident. How could anyone not relate to each character as she/he moved through the cycles of becoming aware of family wounds, courageously moving toward and then exploring them--often with the mantle of childhood firmly upon their shoulders--and then coming to a resolution? Beautifully, beautifully done. Thank you, Paula! Laura Neff Charlotte, NC
Finished the book in two nights - couldn't put it down. It both captivated and captured me! It wasn't so much seeing where the story was going as it was seeing where the characters were going. Their development was engrossing. The book is still "with me", and I find myself remembering parts of it at odd times of my day. There is a part of all of us to be found somewhere in these stories. I loved the descriptive way with words! It brought both tears and laughter as the characters became very close friends to me...and as friends do, enriched my life. Mary Hines
The characters in broken water are immediately recognizable. The references to Little Rock landmarks round out the characters' personality and lifestyle for the reader. The book is heartbreakingly familiar but ends with the hope of understanding that comes with maturity. The story isn't tied up with a bow at the end making the story so much more real. You really expect to run into Ellie or Toby the next time you're in downtown. DeAnn Hubberd Little Rock, AR
I thought broken water was incredible. Your characters (several of whom bear a remarkable similarity to my blood relations) were endearingly, sometimes heartbreakingly, recognizable. I read it in the gym, and as I teared up at the end, when Ellie and Toby revisit their youth, I had to pretend I had sweat in my eye. I think that many writers try to show the beautiful sides of broken people and fail, either over-or-undershooting their marks. You nailed it. Jamie Myers Texas
broken water is a book that every mother and daughter should read. Beautifully written, the author addresses the complexities of that relationship in particular. The stories of the main characters, Ellie and Elizabeth, remind us all that when we feel misunderstood by someone we care about, it's often because we're also misunderstanding. And when we feel unloved, it's almost always because that love is buried beneath some deep pain. Morell's short story cycle reminds us that once the love between a mother and daughter is unearthed and explored, there are few loves greater. Paula Hilton Slidell, LA
I found BROKEN WATER poignant. The characters are rich and live long after the story ends on paper. Janice Krasselt Tatter Little Rock, AR
This is the best book I have read in a while. I never knew that short stories could be so wonderful. I think everyone should have a chance to read this book. I am recommending it for our next book in the book club. Jennifer Hughes Richfield, UT
I read this book in one sitting. I could not put it down. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, you will identify with the main character as she gets next to your heart. Highly recommended. Laura Giannavola Little Rock, AR
Broken Water is a story of contemporary family life in America. It's a story of dysfunctional relationships, thwarted dreams, unforgiven betrayals, personal isolation, and loss. It's a lot like my family's story; and perhaps your family's as well. But it's also a book that ends hopefully, with at least the possibility of better tomorrows. I was fascinated with the book and read it at one sitting.
I highly recommend it. jesse clanton conway, arkansas
The most special pleasure of reading Paula Morells' book "brokenwater" was to read it for a second time. It is the best way to fully appreciate the depth of thought and emotion on open display for the reader. In fact, the reader is so instantly drawn into the almost conversational narrative, that one almost becomes a willing participant in each story. Simplistically profound in it's ability to engage the reader. Elegant. Do something good for yourself. Read It! Bill Hall Little Rock, AR
Incredible. The way Morell weaves these beautiful yet tragic characters' lives is disturbing and at the same time illuminating. Through Ellie's sarcastic and often sardonic eyes, we come to understand her world-- but then we are also privy to information that she isn't, which makes the book that much more interesting. Morell is working here on many layers and levels, and I for one am changed in the process. A work of art. B. Holmes Houston, TX
The short story cycle, broken water was throughly enjoyable in every way. I definately believe that the literary genius who wrote it, Paula Martin Morell, was given the gift and the grace by Our Loving God to bring pleasure and reality to all those who are blessed to read this work of art.
